Ghanaian singer and songwriter Akwaboah has revealed he no longer writes songs for other artistes, citing years of being denied due credit for his work. According to him, the decision was born out of frustration with how his contributions were repeatedly overlooked by those he helped create hits for.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on 3 Music TV on Saturday, July 5, 2025, Akwaboah shared a personal experience that ultimately pushed him to put his focus entirely on his own music career.
“Initially, I was writing songs for people but sometimes I don’t get the credit,” he said. “They get on stage and then say, ‘I thank God, I thank my manager, I thank Charterhouse,’ and leave.”
The multiple award-winning singer and songwriter recalled a specific incident involving a female artiste who won an award for a song he had written. According to him, she expressed gratitude to everyone involved — except the person behind the lyrics.
“There was this lady who once won an award and was thanking everyone on stage: her manager, her team, even the producer, but not me. Meanwhile, the song she won the award with was one I wrote,” he recounted.
That moment, Akwaboah said, was an eye-opener and marked a turning point in how he views his role as a creative.
“I was like okay, that’s a lesson. So, from now, I will sing mine,” he stated.
Over the years, ‘I do love you’ singer has written songs for a number of top Ghanaian musicians, including Becca, Sarkodie, DSP Kofi Sarpong, and others — contributing significantly to some of their most celebrated records. Despite this, he said recognition for his songwriting has not always followed.
While he acknowledges the importance of collaboration in the music industry, he insists that proper credit is crucial for the growth and motivation of behind-the-scenes creatives.
The singer also spoke about his latest single Smile Again, which features popular Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari. According to Akwaboah, he wanted a female voice to help interpret the emotional depth of the song — and Nadia was his ideal choice.
Though his songwriting has powered the success of many in the industry, Akwaboah’s recent shift signals a personal decision to take full ownership of his work and step into the spotlight with his own voice and story.
