Almost 30 years ago, Method Man joined his Wu-Tang Clan cohorts for a special remix of SWV’s “Anything.” The song featured multiple samples, ranging from Funk-Disco group Freedom to freshly released hits by the two groups on the track. “Anything” became a pivot point for Sisters With Voices, taking their opening song from the debut album and setting up for a gold-certified remix EP nearly two years later.
Method Man has thrived in R&B collaborations, particularly with female partners. The MC won a Grammy alongside Mary J. Blige for “I’ll Be There For You / You’re All I Need To Get By.” He has since worked with Lauryn Hill, Toni Braxton, and Teyana Taylor.
Method Man & Slick Rick Wreck A DJ Muggs Beat
In 2023, Mr. Meth steps in for a collaboration alongside Xscape alum Tamika Scott. “Tonight” is a self-released single that finds the Wu-Tang Clan MC reworking vital elements of Nas’ 2001 impassioned hit “One Mic.” “All I need is one night, one flight / For that forbidden fruit just one bite / Got Twitter fingers only for one type / I’m unlike these F-boys but this one mic / Get one like, pardon my Mobb Deep, she done right / Hun tight, caught in my gun sight / One snipe, she done like why did you bring a knife to a gunfight / I’m nice, I’m like Little Caesars in life / I got extra cheese and pizza, give Mona Lisa a slice / Yeah, get it, ’cause I’m so Slick Rick wit it / We quit it, I patch it up and tell you Slick Rick did it,” raps the MC to a beat reminiscent of the track co-produced by Nas and the late Chucky Thompson.
The song also channels Phil Collins’ 1981 hit “In The Air Tonight.” With Nas’ song having a similar crescendo and drums as Phil’s song 20 years earlier, it’s a seamless fit. Tamika sings: “I can feel the magic in the air tonight, oh ohh / It’s just something bout this moment that feels so right / Oh ohh / I can feel / I can feel the magic in the air tonight / It’s just something, it’s just something ’bout this moment that feels so right / Feels so right, oh ohh / Tonight.”
