R Kelly to serve 20-years in prison
American singer R Kelly has been sentenced to 20 years in Chicago prison for child pornography and enticement of minors for sex.
The disgraced singer, real name Robert Sylvester Kelly, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in New York on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.
Last year September 2022, the 56-year-old was found guilty on six of the thirteen charges levelled against him in Chicago, including three counts of coercing minors into sexual activity and three counts of producing sex tapes involving a minor.
He was found not guilty of obstructing an earlier investigation into the abuse of his 14-year-old goddaughter, as well as two counts of enticing minors to have sex.
At the hearing on Thursday, February 23, 2023, the U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber sentenced Kelly and ordered that he serve one year in prison following the racketeering sentence imposed last year in New York after the jury found that he had produced three videos of himself sexually abusing his 14-year-old goddaughter.
The Jury in Chicago convicted R Kelly of six of the 13 charges brought against im in connection with sexual abuse during the 1990s including counts of coercing three minors into sexual activities and three others by producing sex tapes which also included a minor.
At the start of the hearing, Judge Leinenweber said that he did not accept the government’s contention that Mr. Kelly used fear to woo underage girls for sex.
The (government’s) whole theory of grooming, was sort of the opposite of fear of bodily harm,” the judge said…“It was the fear of lost love, lost affections (from Mr. Kelly)…It just doesn’t seem to me that it rises to the fear of bodily harm.”
“Your honor, I have gone over it with my attorney,” Mr. Kelly said. “I’m just relying on my attorney for that.”
“The only way to ensure he will not reoffend is to impose a sentence that will keep him in prison for the rest of his life”, Jeannice Williams Appenteng, one of the prosecutor said in court on Thursday.
Last year June 2022, after being convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering he was sentenced to 30 years in prison but Kelly, denied all charges, but he was also found in violation of the Mann Act, an anti-sex trafficking law.
In January 2023, a Chicago prosecutor also stated that she is dropping sexual assault charges against singer R Kelly, following federal convictions in two courts that should ensure that R&B star is imprisoned for decades.
As a result of this, R Kelly’s final court verdict on Thursday over child crimes sex charges by the Chicago Jury has been limited, and he will serve 20 years in prison
